Started on 2001 by the bishop of the Luwero diocese, Wekembe was a plan of microcredit. It wanted to guarantee to the poorest population, in particular to women, the possibility to start through micro-group loans an own activity in order to improve the life conditions of their families.

The purposes of the project were:

  • giving money to families allowing them the beginning of their own commercial activities;
  • strengthening the project Wekembe in the diocese of Kampala making it a stable and efficient tool through the formation of 75 new loan officers for the education of the beneficiaries in the management of the loans received, the extension of loans to reach the 51 parishes of the Kampala diocese, the development of the offer to clients starting from the simple support of little activities to the planning of residences and the education about the ways of management of loans and the improvement of the operative efficiency through the infrastructures and managerial tools.

Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore and the microfinance department of Uganda Martyrs University started the biannual course “The Microcredit Loan Officer: Practical Preparation”  in cooperation with the Kampala archdiocese and the project Wekembe, to transmit to the microcredit professionals the necessary competences to become loan agents and to guarantee professionalism and efficiency to their clients.
