Sport and social inclusion

June 2009 - June 2010

Completed project

Sport as a tool for social inclusion

Sport as a potential tool of aggregation or social cohesion, as an occasion to network with different cultures, religions and ideologies, is more and more recognized. Today, many national and international organizations promote initiatives using sport to intervene in specific contexts where the processes of development (especially for young people) are prevented and slowed down because of difficult socio-economic conditions. An international platform about the theme “Platform on Sport and Development” (www.sportanddev.org), was born after the International Conference on Sport and Development which took place in Switzerland on 2003. It gathers materials and projects on the following topics: sport and education, sport and disability, sport and construction of peace, sport and economic development, etc.
Projects promoted by different national and international realities have also different purposes and addressees: from the construction of schools and hospitals thanks to the fund-raising through sportive events, to the development of sportive activities in the schools, from the promotion of health regarding phenomena such as HIV, to the promotion of dialogue and cultural integration. But two elements emerge from the projects: the lack of specific studies and the shortage of the monitoring, the outcomes and the repercussions considering that projects challenge complex questions such as the development, the well-being, the integration.

Because of the investments and the social purposes that the projects involve, it is important to disclose the results, identifying criteria of efficacy or ineffectiveness to reach predetermined finalities, for the addressees and the communities. It is also important to consider the professional competences to work in this field (management of potentialities and sport risks, competences of psycho-social management, local nets management, dialogue planning, promotion and negotiation the differences, monitoring and evaluation).

This project has ben realized in cooperation with Champions for Children Foundation.
