Ongoing project

Training courses in support of vulnerable children and the geriatric population of Myanmar

The project stems from a solicitation received from the Pontifical Institute for Foreign Missions (PIME) in relation to the need to take charge of the medical and rehabilitation needs of the child and geriatric population of Myanmar. In particular, interventions are needed in the area of neonatal, child and pediatric rehabilitation in general, and the medical management of the elderly.

In September 2018, a first mission is carried out in Myanmar to make contact with the local reality and deepen the analysis of the medical-rehabilitative needs of children with disabilities. prof. Roberto Bernabei, prof. Eugenio Mercuri and dott. Stefano Usai.

Following the mission, Università Cattolica with its own funds has launched an intervention with the aim of promoting the welfare of children with disabilities and improving the medical care of the geriatric population.

The first training course was conducted in March 2019. The trainees, staff working in the area identified in synergy with The Leprosy Mission Myanmar, participated in an "on the job" training course with the aim of improving rehabilitation skills on aspects related to both the diagnosis and assistance of disabilities, particularly in the field of rehabilitation. Clinical cases divided by age group (newborn, infant, child) were examined, examining in depth the aspects of differential and semeiotic diagnosis, neuromotor, psychomotor and speech therapy rehabilitation.
