Denis Mukwege, after specializing in gynecology in France, chose to return to the Democratic Republic of Congo, where in 1999 he founded the Panzi Hospital in Bukavu. In a war-torn country, and despite the threats and attacks suffered by armed groups, Mukwege and his staff have rescued tens of thousands of victims of rape and brutal violence over the years. The hospital not only treats physical injuries, but also provides legal assistance and support to promote the socio-economic reintegration of women.
For his commitment to ending the use of sexual violence as a weapon of war, he received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2018.
