The essential. Globalization of gossip and resistance of culture

On Thursday, May 9, 2024 , the "Julien Ries" Archive for Symbolic Anthropology organizes a meeting to present the volume "The Essential. Globalization of chatter and resistance of culture" (S. Petrosino, R. Righetto, Castelvecchi 2023).

The initiative is organized within the framework of the activities of the Ries Archive aimed at promoting a reflection on themes adhering to symbolic anthropology in contemporary times: the volume, in fact, deals with a current theme that has to do with today's man and his conception of the world in relation to the mass of information in which he finds himself living more and more intensely. In what terms is it possible to distinguish "chatter" from "thought"? How is it possible to maintain a posture integrated into the current possibilities of communication "at all costs and always", but without getting lost in a continuous and constant chatter of which nothing can be retained? In what terms are we discussing today, for example, religion and the crisis of Christianity?

"Faced with this 'globalization of gossip' and the homologation of which it is at the same time cause and effect, the authors of these pages are convinced that it is not so much a matter of going back [...], but rather of recognizing and firmly reiterating that formulating and transmitting an opinion does not at all mean articulating and communicating a thought" (Introduction, pp. 7-8).

The meeting, which will take place in the presence of the two authors of the volume, Prof. Silvano Petrosino and Dr. Roberto Righetto, will also see the presence of Dr. Martino Cervo (deputy director of the newspaper "La Verità") as moderator.

The meeting will be held at the Vita e Pensiero bookshop (largo Gemelli 1) from 5.30 pm to 7.00 pm.
