Supporting BMC activities

October2011 - August 2013

Completed project

Intervention in support of BMC activities

Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in partnership with  Amicus Onlus, an Italian-Ghanaian cooperation and voluntary association which has been operating in the field of humanitarian support since 2002, started the project “Supportive activities to Baobab Medical Centre” in Ghana at BMC, a medical Centre located in Biriwa district, in the Central Region. The implementation of the project was made possible thanks to the fund-raising of Università Cattolica 5 per mille.

Considering the difficulties of the local healthcare system and the stunning growth of patients, the project foresees the dispatch of  specialized medical personnel coming from Policlinico A. Gemelli. The medical personnel from Università Cattolica comes from the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery “A. Gemelli”; the activities were coordinated under the scientific supervision of Prof. Roberto Cauda.

The BMC, runned by local staff – belonging to the Ghanaian Health Service – and supported by Amicus Onlus, guarantees:

The centre works with hospitals of the area (Cape Coast and Saltpond) where it sends medical cases who need a recovery. The activity is realized in cooperation with Italian voluntary doctors. Their stay in Ghana is structured so that when a new Italian doctor arrives there is an other doctor who has acquired a certain familiarity with local conditions and so he can transmit his experience to the new comer.

BMC realizes medical training activity at 3 levels: for the population, for the medical staff of the centre and for medical assistants.

The staff of the centre reaches villages and communities of the District in order to offer the following services: vaccines, screening in the schools, education to the family planning, medical education, personal hygiene and food education, prenatal assistance, education to nutrition.

Amicus onlus created a fund in the local bank to solve the problem of poor patients who need medicines. This fund is supported thanks to voluntary doctors.

The activities realized during the missions were:

  • Staff training “on the job”

  • Cardiological visits, electrocardiogram, echocardiogram and prevention of cardiovascular diseases

  • Eyes visits and measurement of sight

  • Otolaryngological visits

  • Pediatric visits

  • Infectivology visits
